QORMI BREADFESTIVAL – Experiencing the bakers' tradition shall be organised within the locality of Qormi, which has a long tradition of bread-making dating back to the Knights’ period in Malta. In fact, in view of the large number of bakers present in Qormi during the Knights’ period, this village has since been also known as “Casal Fornaro” (lit. the baker’s village). The number of bakers, although still quite considerable compared to other localities, has decreased within Qormi. The aim of the project is to make the locals aware of this dwindling tradition and to increase a sense of consciousness amongst local layman and government entities of the importance of the tradition, not solely as a means of employment but most importantly as cultural heritage.
The Qormi Bread Festival evolves around the concept of promoting the local bread-making tradition, encouraging its preservation and demonstrating its importance as a unifying factor amongst the diversity of cultures located within Malta’s surrounding region.
Qormi boasts of having the best “Hobz tal-Malti” (lit. Maltese bread) from all over the Maltese islands which tradition dates back to the Knights period.
